Beginning Horsemanship Day Camps
At the Stroud Ranch in beautiful Black Forest
Each week is filled with a variety of fun activities in addition to riding and learning to take care of the horse. Campers receive basic knowledge in the handling of horses on the ground and in the saddle in a wholesome environment.
An affordable horse camp near Colorado Springs! Classes are small (6-8 campers) and everything is provided; appropriate horses and safety equipment (helmets, breakaway stirrups).
A Horse Show on Friday will give the campers a chance to demonstrate their knowledge to family and friends. This will be at the campsite, 15750 Siesta Grove.
Schedule of camp weeks for 2009
June 22-26, from 9am-3pm, will be for Level One ages 10-16. If that week fills then a second will be scheduled for July 6-10.
More advanced camps: TBA
Level One: Introduction to Horses
This course includes: Safety with horses, grooming and care, horse anatomy, leading and ground control, tack and saddling up, mounting/dismounting, and the first elements of riding; such as posture, hands, emergency stop, go forward, direct and indirect reins, disengaging the hindquarters, and a two rein stop. All riding exercises will be done at a walk and trot according to the rider's skill and confidence level. We will explore the similarities/differences of English vs. Western tack and riding, however, the training the campers receive is universal in nature and will serve them well whatever riding discipline they should decided to follow in the future.
Level Two: Elements of Riding (not yet scheduled)
This course includes: Respect on the ground means respect in the saddle which focuses on ground training to prepare for riding. Getting a better go and whoa. Using an indirect rein and more advanced steering. Maintaining a proper head set. We will learn to ride both sitting and rising trots. Exercises will be done at a walk and trot according to campers’ skill and confidence level.
